Superbike Madness at Assen

September 4th 2006 03:14
The superbike circus went to Assen and the heavens opened up! There were thrills and spills galore as rider after rider ran off into the kitty litter. Bayliss, Corser, Haga, Kagayama, Barros, Xaus – just some of the names that succumbed to the wet conditions.
Race 1 saw an unlikely winner in Kawasaki’s Chris Walker. But as the rain came down, Walker proved he could keep the machine on the track and bring home the win. This was Kawasaki’s first win in superbikes for 6 years! Walker finished the first lap in 25th place and worked his way up to take the win over Andrew Pitt by nearly 5 seconds.

Haga had a 20second lead when he visited the kitty litter at lap 13 and Young Aussie Josh Brookes made it up to 5th place at one stage before he too went down in lap 16.

Race 2 saw some dryer conditions but a first corner incident took out Corser, Haga and Toseland. Amazingly Toseland remounted and chased down the field to finish a credible 9th!

With those 3 out of the race, Bayliss diced with Kagayama for a couple of laps before he showed a clean pair of heels and streaked to take the win by nearly 10 seconds over Andrew Pitt. But the real racing was for 3rd. Xaus, Nieto, and Kagayama were chopping and changing for the majority of the second half of the race. Nieto eventually managed to get in front of the other two but it was a drag race between Kagayama and Xaus from the last corner to the chequers with Kagayama the victor.

The Overall was an Aussie 1-2 with Bayliss and Pitt and Fonsi Nieto taking out the third spot on the podium.

The championship looks set to be Bayliss’s for the taking with a lead of 100 points over Toseland, and just 2 points behind in third is Haga.

Round 10 is next weekend in Germany at the Lausitz circuit and with any luck the Aussie contingent can keep their winning ways going!
